Assessments of Sediment Loads at Deep Creek Lake

Erica Koeplin, Environmental Engineering major, participated in research looking at erosion within the Deep Creek Lake watershed in Garrett County, Maryland. This study assessed the erosion and unstable banks of Poland Run, which leads to Poland Cave, a cove which was a specific area of concern for sediment influx. Erica's research has helped identify a major sediment source which may be contributing to the worsening water quality of the watershed as a result of erosion, and the results of this project will help inform better management to limit sediment from entering Deep Creek Lake, preserving the resource for future generations. Erica began her research in the Spring semester of 2025 and presented her most recent project updates at the Fall 2025 Common Waters Symposium.
